Re posts below: says on the website that this Lola gal who won Miss Chinese Benelux will be at Miss Chinese International 2003. Wonder if she'll represent The Hague like the girl this year?

Finale in Hong Kong

I was wondering why so many people are so negative about girls being naturally skinny? What if you can't gain weight then that shouldn't be your fault. I mean if you are starving yourself then thats bad. I was always skinny all my life wanting to gain weight. It's in the family genes. I have tried to eat more fatty foods and eat big portions, but no luck. Until 3 years ago I talk to my docter and asked her about how to gain weight? So she did a body check up and found out that I have high cholestorol level(eating fatty foods). She told me that I have very high metabolism,my bone structure is small and I am healthy. She said that as long as your body is functioning healthily then there is nothing wrong. I am now 5'7 and 97lbs,university student and no exercise. On average I eat 4 lbs of food a day. In a whole day if I don't eat anything my weight will be 93lbs tomorrow.
I just want to let you know that there are many girls who are skinny feeling bad when the first thing that comes to a persons mind when seeing them is that "Oh my god she is so unhealthy, so must be dieting or starving herself"
please don't be sterotype it makes people feel bad.

Almost the opposite to Amanda's post--why are people so against girls with meat on their bones? Just because she has more flesh/muslce on her frame, people (esp. chinese) automatically assume that she is overweight or eats too much (as compared to the skinny girls, who cant gain weight as in Amanda's case).

if you are a contestant in the miss chinese toronto pageant, does anyone know if you have the option of doing your own makeup for the pictures and final night instead of having the makeup artist doing it for you ?

I Think there should be an option to let the contestant decide. If some contestant feel that the makeup artist can do a better job, then they can request that the makeup artist to do it for them. Those who know how to apply make up professonally or if they can more comfortable doing their selves should do it their selve. If the makeup artist is concerned with having the contestents to have the same colour style, all the makeup artist needs to do is specify the colours they need to use to the contestant.

My mom called my aunt in Toronto to ask her to tape the MCI '02 pageant (since it's not broadcast where I live). My aunt read some disturbing news in the papers -- that the contestants were all force-fed some special Chinese diet medicine to make them lose weight. She said that Miss Toronto lost 20 lbs. after arriving in Hong Kong, which subsequently led to her winning that special award.

I know two of this year's contestants and noticed that they had lost weight, but figured it was due to working out prior to MCI, not to some medication. The pageant organizers should be ashamed of themselves.

She wasn't 1st or 2nd runner up, she won by default, she never even went back to Taiwan to compete. Her husband now who is a Diplomat in Taiwan set it up. I mean look at her do you honestly think she qualifies for the title? I know this because I know someone who dated her for 2 years, she lived here in Herndon, Va. during that time.

Shirley Chow Suet, the winner of this year's Miss Chinese International Pageant, has opted to resume her studies in Canada rather than attempt to develop a career in the entertainment circle. Chow, who does not speak Cantonese very well, will revisit the matter of returning to Hong Kong upon the completion of her university career. Related image (courtesy The Sun):

I don't think Taiwan is going to send anyone to Miss Universe this year. They suck! The last real winner from taiwan they sent to represent was in 1999. In 2000, they sent a runner-up from their 97 pageant, that's ok I guess. But in 2001, they hand picked the girl to represent who also just happens to go to all the international competitions but have never competited in Taiwan. The organizers suck because there are soooo many beautiful and talented and smart and intelligent girls in taiwan. Do you think they'll send this year's representative from Miss chinese international to competite in Miss Universe? God I hope not!!!!! Please send someone who beautiful, classy and elegant like in 99 and 98!

Subject: MUO intend to hold Miss Universe 2003 in Shanghai, China

Author:
Anthony
[Edit]

Date Posted: 11:32:37 02/22/02 Fri

Hello! I came across the news in Feb 22's issue of Apple Daily (HK) & other media in the past.

According to the secretary general of the organization responsible for electing this year's MU China, the MUO is having the intention of holding the world finals of Miss Universe in Shanghai, China in 2003.

Through the pageant, MUO would like not only to introduce the concept of beauty pageant to China, but also give an impetus to the beauty-related industry, as Shanghai is the main gateway for foreign brands to enter the Chinese market.

Preliminaries of the pageant are still underway in different parts of China. But it is said that the pageant is not publicized enough. My experience tells me too. It's been very hard to find any news, ads or whatsoever regarding the events from the Internet. I happened to read only 2,3 news related to it since Sep last year.

Conventional beauty pageants had not been approved by the Chinese gov't. Back in 1994 an organization assigned by Miss World Org. had elected a representative thru a pageant namely 'Miss Orient' but failed to get the approval then. (I still vaguely remember how the winner looked from the newspapers. The lady that actually represented China that year was not her, probably a hand-picked model....she was in fact the 1st MW delegate from China; her picture can be seen in globalbeauties.com).

In fact, Manhunt Int'l 2001 in Beijing China was held under the name of a modelling contest. And the pageant to which MUO has given the MU China rights is held in the name of "The 'Nice' Brand's Showcase of the Styles of the Ethnic Minorities of China in the New Millenniumm" Contest (what a long name!)

But pageants of various topics & natures (for both men & women)like modelling contests, image ambassadors, Miss Internet, etc. have been flourishing in China for the past 10 years or so. So it's just about time for a conventional
beauty pageant to be 'officially recognized'... should be very soon.

Thanks for your attention!

P.S. Actually Miss China World Bing Li was also hand-picked, from a group of contract models signed to the 'New Silk Road Model Inc.'(a major modelling agency in China) which is now MW's China franchise. The agency discovered her 2,3 years ago for her modelling potential. She then participated in '99 Ford World Model Contest & ended in Top 10. It is said that one of the reasons for choosing Bing Li was due to a French business acquaintance's comment on her 'international appeal', amongst other qualities. Anyhow, New Silk Road was going to set up a 'beauty pageant department' targeting on beauty-related affairs.

On the radio in toronto, Christie Bartram (Miss Toronto 2002, first runner up at MCI 2002) was a guest, and people were calling in to tell her whether she should accept the contract she was offered to go to Hong Kong and act for TVB. Should she go? Or should she focus on her academics? What do you all think?

Hey Y'all...the Miss USA pageant is March 1 and there is a chinese girl in the pageant. Miss Maine! She seems very intelligent but she might be a little short but nonethless, she's one of 51! How cool is that!

Her name is Su-Ying and she plans to attend law school. Go to Missusa.com to check it out!!

I'm just wondering if MissHK actually undergo training for the international pageant like Miss World,Miss Universe and Miss International.I'd watched the MissHK ever since i was a kid(i was 8 when i watched the 1994 pageant til present) and i must say that back in the late70s,80s and early 90s,HK produced the finest delegates for the international pageant but only three of them make the cut and no crown for HK yet.PITY!!Just look at Chu Ling-Ling,Olivia Cheng,Cally Kwong,Maggie Cheung(she was MISS WORLD SEMIFINALIST),Mina Joyce Godenzi(Ko Lai Hung),Pauline Yeung(Miss Universe 4th runner-up and Miss World semifinalist),Michelle Monique Reis,Monica Chan,Anita Yuen,Amy Kwok,Sonija Kwok. They are stunning!!!!!!Just beautiful!!!They have all the potential to be crown Miss World and Miss Universe.Maggie Cheung could become Miss World 1983 if she really undergo true pageant training,Michelle Reis or Chu ling ling could become HK's first Miss Universe!!!I just don't understand why!!!Could anyone out there tell me do the girls really undergo intensive training? Is there anything you guys could do to help your country to,at least, bag a international title(i mean the Miss World and Miss Universe and not the Miss Chinese International)
