Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of Hanebrink's grappling skills? He seems to be the best option available to me to train in mma near Charlotte. I can't believe a city the size of Charlotte offers no mma training.

Did you go to any of the schools suggested earlier?

I went to Togno's and Hurst's school. They both were excellent schools if all I wanted to do was grapple but I want to train in mma. It seems the best option available is the Team Roc affiliate, Shooter's Gym in Asheville, and Cherles Hanebrink in Rock Hill, S.C. I haven't had the time to check out either of these schools because I'm still living in Boone. Right now I'm leaning towards the Team ROC affiliate.

I dunno if the Team ROC affiliate in Charlotte has a striking program. If you are talking about Mike Kogan at the Royce Gracie Network, I think they just offer BJJ. Could be wrong though.

Never heard of Shooters offering a striking program either though. Although the coach there has fought in Pancrase once in the past.

Mike Kogan is who I'm talking about. It says on his website that they offer mma training twice a week. I'll e-mail him and see if that's true. Where would you train in Charlotte if you had to move there?

Are wanting to compete in MMA or just interested in training?

Reid,

In regards to your question about who would I train with in Charlotte. That's a hard one. There are several good groups out there who could benefit anyone wanting to up their skill level.

I have a good friend who lives in the area who trained with Luis Togno at Sucuri BJJ for about two years. He spoke very highly of him and thought he was a great instructor despite criticism by some. However, I think Togno only teaches BJJ.

Someone like Jeff Jimmo who is certified under Paulson and Rutten would be a good choice if you are more akin to the Japanese shoot style and like things like leglocks and you don't work the gi too often. Jeff has Sombo credentials as well. I've never met him, but have only heard good things about him.

As far as Mike Kogan is concerned, I only know of him as Royce's manager and have heard him mentioned through some of my friends who are members of Team ROC. If he trains his guys in any way like Greg (Chapel Hill), Brent (Eden/Greensboro), Or Jason (Raliegh) trains their guys, then that would be an ideal place for someone who is looking to compete. Team ROC has a proven track record in competition and has always given me the impression of being a pretty tight knit group.

As an alternative, you might want to look into some of the AAU or Police Athletic League clubs. I know that there are both PAL Judo and Boxing clubs in the charlotte area. Usually the cost for these is pretty low and you can always supplement this by visiting other gyms on your down time.

Sparring with a wide variety of people will always give you an advantage in competition.

Steve

Thanks for the info Steve. I'll check out Jeff Jimmo and Mike Kogan and see what their schools are like.

I've trained at the Charlotte Boxing Academy for about 2 months before moving to Boone and the cost was about $20 a month. There's also a Muay Thai and wrestling club at UNC Charlotte which would be free. If the Muay Thai is legit then I could supplement that with some BJJ and wrestling training and hopefully that will give me a solid base to compete in mma.

Anyway, thanks for the info again. I wonder how long it will take for someone to open up an active mma school in Charlotte? There's a bunch of mma schools in the Raleigh Durham area but nothing in Charlotte. I guess the tri-city area is the fighting capital of NC.

Unless it's changed, the MT at UNCC is more akin to Tae Bo than Thai boxing. Jimmo's emphasis these days is more self protection. He teaches some sport application in his classes, but that's not the emphasis. Private lessons would be the way to go with him or Shields (not a bad idea anyway, if you want to compete in MMA.) The judo club at Matthews PAL is very good. See Matt Mescan.
