- asking for help -- Liz Lindsay, Tue, Apr 22 2003, 16:38:47
I am a teacher in the English and learning support departments of a secondary school near Middlesbrough. I am doing a post graduate course on teaching pupils with specific learning difficulties, particularly dyslexia. My final piece of work is to develop an action plan that will have an impact on the whole school. I am looking at making the school more dyslexia friendly/aware. this is where I need help from as many people as possible. would it be better if every department followed a similar format for written work, homework, correcting (or not) spellings, do people with dyslexia want other pupils to know, how do they want to be treated, which are the best sets etc. Worksheets/handouts what is the best colour, font, size, spacing, use of images etc. Any ideas that will help to create a dyslexia aware and friendly school will be appreciated. Please e-mail direct to:

ITV That's Esther -- hi2u, Sun, Apr 13 2003, 15:23:46
receive following letter this week
'That's Esther' is ITV's leading social affairs programme. Presented by Esther Rantzen this 13 x 30-minute programme launches for its fifth series, Sunday lunchtimes from 9th February 2003. This series each programme will be themed to cover a single subject - from success against the odds or disability to crime or prejudice.
'That's Esther' has always been an inspirational and positive campaigning show about 'making a difference'. We'll feature people who've empowered themselves by making a difference to their own lives and inspiring others. People who've overcome adversity, disability or prejudice - remarkable people doing remarkable things against the odds.
We are currently researching a new programme for the series on children with behavioural difficulties associated with brain dysfunctions. One condition we are looking at is ADHD. We are looking for a family that would be willing to take part in the programme who have a child/children with the disorder, how they cope, what symptoms they have, what school life is like, the impact on the rest of the family.
If you are interested or know anyone who might be interested in taking part, or maybe you would like to find out more details, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for time and patience.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Jenni Day

'invisible' disabilities are often the hardest of all to cope with - especially as many symptoms overlap between different areas of concern. This is why I have written a book called Does Your Child Have a Hidden Disability? which I hope will make it a little easier for parents to find their way through the maze of different advice.
Also...Happy New Year!

Memory -- Chris, Sun, Apr 14 2002, 14:36:13
Hi Everyone
I would just like to say that Microsoft are in a very dangerous place because they have got on to my black list (for 291210921th time.)
The reason why is I've got an old DOS program that needs more that the DOS maximum of 640kb to run. Normaly this would not be a problem but in Windows ME it is because Windows ME has disabled the EMS expanded memory field on the DOS window proprieties box. After searching the web for many days I found a way to put this right. But the program still would not even though I set EMS to auto and also tryed it on many other settings but still no. Then I reilised that EMM386 was still not installed so EMS memory still wouldn't work anyway. If anyone out there could help me with this stupid Windows ME computer (without telling me to switch operating system, because this is a notebook PC and they work a little differently so the operating system is fine tuned in the factory or somthing like that to cope with the way they use the system resorses.) Anyway as I was saying if anyone could help me with my EMM386 with Windows ME please respond to this.
Bye from Chris.

- A Big THANK-YOU Andy -- Rach, Sat, Apr 13 2002, 16:31:34
Well Andy thanks to your advice on going to The Private Clinic in Mansfield and seeing Dr Kumar (Psychiatrist) I am now officially diagnosed with ADD.
Who'd have thought that a woman my bloody age (33) would be thrilled with a dx like that!!! But now i feel alot of my frustration lifted as someone has confirmed my dx.
He is writing now to my local psych and G.P to let them know of his findings and to suggest they put me on stimulant medication (poss Dexadrine) as he thinks this would benefit me, so it's took me 2 yrs and abit of money to get this far so on to the next step now........Will my psych prescribe me or not ??????? If he won't it will mean me paying for the medication myself which will cost alot of money, but now i have the diagnosis this will give me more power to fight my case with the NHS Surely?.......So watch this space for the next episode, i'm seeing my psych on the 25th April so i'll let you know.
Thanks again to you Andy for your help and support, i'll be in touch soon. Best wishes to Dot and everyone else on here too xxxxxx

adhd question -- Lynn, Thu, Apr 04 2002, 0:03:44
I take my nephews for the occassional holiday, both have adhd, is it normal practice for children under 11 to be given breaks from their ritalin? They are both 'off the wall' without it but I am beginning to think their breaks only occur when me or their gran takes them for a while, do you give the ritalin a break out of the system?

- Revelation for me -- Adelaide, Mon, Apr 01 2002, 6:53:55
On Easter Sunday which was yesterday, I was talking with my mother and step-grandmother about the spunks which seem to infilitrate Cambridge City Council and especially Youth Services.
The last one I really fell in love with: his name was Bill and he was such a kind man. He loved M and Ms and his heart and soul was in advertising.
The bombshell fell. He said he was interested in reading my books (this was August 1997 and I was in my second year at Cambridge University) and he said also that he would get his wife to do it.
My mother and step-father eventually found out that he couldn't read and write but for a few words. HE HAD IT ALL IN HIS HEAD, all these advertising details! And he got his wife to read EVERYTHING for him.
Bill is highly intelligent, and we might have employed him if there was something free. Very shortly after that my family's desktop publishing business collapsed.
But now my step-father is doing contract work for the Arts Newsletter, and that's how we got to meet 6 foot 2 inch tall Sebastian. I run into my mother's office and say to her later on, "Well, isn't he a spunk."
When I heard Bill couldn't read or write I sat absolutely still, even as my cousin Moriah was playing around. Now that was a hidden impairment of the first rank!

medical conditions that aren't noticeable -- Andy, Sat, Mar 16 2002, 14:46:42
hi everyone
While going through messages and articles on the hi2u site it makes me think about how people go to huge lengths trying to hide difficulties or medical conditions they have!
Sara has highlighted how dyslexia issues are swept under the carpet and people have difficulties expressing their dyslexia needs. Shirley has provided article "you don't look ill" (well I think that's the title) that is on the visitors input page of this site.
Both show how their are conditions perhaps we would rather hide rather than telling people. I'm just wondering whether it's always advisable to be more open to people about one's difficulties or whether in some cases it's better off hiding this!
I have a physical impairment too that causes much physical pain from time to time usually I hide this as much as possible. However sometimes and generally more often recently will explain to people that I unable to make contributions at a particular time because of severe physical pain. Is this wise? Should one the open about difficulties? Will it provide better understanding or more discrimination? Please let me know your views.
Look forward to seeing your views.
Andy

Union rep. -- Ima Nut, Sun, Mar 17 2002, 12:42:57
Toasty, as you seem to manage things, very competently, I was wondering if you would be able to find the time to become the Union representative, for dragons. As there is a remarkable shortage of dragons, (let alone competant ones!), who would be able to efficiently carry out the tasks involved .....your name came immediately to mind.
As you have also travelled extensively (to Australia lately - I believe) there would possibly be an opening further down the track for an international rep.
I know that you have a lot of tasks to do, already, at Hi2u, but would like to ask you to consider this extra job.
As you have not replied to any of my previous correspondence, it would be perfectly acceptable to reply via this forum.
If you could see your way clear to taking on this position, we may in fact, be able to entice some other dragons out into the open, thus creating wider acceptance of dragons.
Yours faithfully
Ima Nut...Union Delegate
