Hi, i have 2 children, girl first she is 15 now and boy second he has just gone 12, he is the one with dyspraxia, he was diganosed in 2002 after a battle up hill of 4 years saying something was wrong? i was told i was over protective, some even sugesting i had a mental problem, but i just Knew there was something wrong with him as early as 6 months old!! Eventually we were told he had dyspraxia and that was it ?? no explanation or information for us so i looked for it my self and now have a healthy file on the subject i sent off for a booklet called Praxis makes Perfect it is a good starting point if your child has just being dignosed or you think he/she may have it the address is Dyspraxia Foundation 8 West Ally, Hitchin , Herts,SG5 1EG telephone 01462 454986/455052. I have kept every letter certificates, activities he has done and kept it in the file he now is old enough to look through it with me ,He hates having dyspraxia and gets upset if it is mentioned by anyone other than his father or me, we are working on it i have explained everyone has something wrong with them it is nothing to be ashamed of! He had 4 years worth of speech therapy and a year of occupational therapy, He has been bullied and attacked over the years of primary school and we came through that now he has started secondry school and we have a great special needs package set up and he is copeing, he stays in a Hostle from Monday-Friday as we live so far away from school and sadly his behaviour has changed it is like going back to him being 3 again!!He is being bullied there and at break times at school (it has'nt affected his school work yet) no one understands him and his behaviour is terrible the sad thing of all is Adults who say he's just bad and hear him but don't listen to him , he finds explaining things hard and folk run out on patience, i'm not using dyspraxia as excuses as there is no excuse for bad behavior! im saying it could be and explanation??, i worry for him and it is annoying when the kids who bully him get away with it and nothing is done!! He struggles with friends and no one gives him time to see the real him , i see it from all sides i just wish he never had this hidden disability as it is often known as. But he has and we will have to get on with it i hope it dos'nt turn a loving, caring , funny boy into a loner who everyone hates!! So i am meeting with the school to see what can be done to stop the bulling? before his school work is affected, we have another huge up-wards battle ahead, we have done it once we can do it again, so to anyone reading this and your battle has just started don't feel alone help is there for you! all you need is the strength and push to get it as it won't come to you, if you hit a brick wall get up and start again! the help is for your child .It is hard but never give in Your G.P will advice you i got all my support via the school which got an educational psycologist in and the ball rolled from there , i never gave in even though i wanted to i even sufferd depression but got over that and found strength to chip away, we recived help from a group called Fusions(now out of action as the council won't give funds for it) he went on 6 wk block sessions doing rock climbing, canoeing , swimming , karate, gorge walking, and friendship building, the children having the same or similar disabilites all doing him the world of good , the help he gets at school is amazing i am in contact with them without being over the top! at home he plays shinty, football, golf, he sails, bike rides, canoe's , loves to fish he is brilliant with animals or nature, he can do embrodiery , cook and is helpful around the house, he is a friendly child, he just needs understanding ,dyspraxia is part of his life we won't let it rule it or ruin it or anyone else will, these children have a lot to put up with and it is a strain on the rest of the family it affects everyone but i belive they will be better people at the end as they are constantly battling along lifes pathways , so don't give up push on and all will be well and never be afraid in asking for help it is there just ask if you don't get it ask again , and again until someone listens to you , you know your child better than anyone else and don't let them tell you other wise , I have a friend who's son goes to a college for children with learning problems i understand it is the only one in the UK! it learns young adults a trade and it helps ease them into the dreadful world we live in! no doubt if my son in 4 years time wants to further his education or wants to be a plumber or electrician or botanist!! I will be looking into this place, i will never give up on him i will support and help him along the way as long as he is happy about it of course! life can be cruel but also kind and i was blessed with a great boy , his name means gift from god all i can say is thankyou we all come with flaws?? good luck. Thanks for listening Debbie.
