Subject: Diabetes Type 1

My two son's have Diabetes Type 1 my first son was diagnosed in 1992 age 6 and the other in 2003 age 14. Their dad was 11 when he was diagnosed and other members of his family have this genetic condition. With the recent public awareness of more children and adults being dianosed with type 2 diabetes due to being over weight, poor diet and inactive life-style etc I feel this has caused more confusion and discrimination relating to this invisable disease. My daughter works in a school and claims some of the teaching staff feel that a child with type 1 diabetes should not be given a snack for mid-morning break because this extra food would not help her to grow out of her poor eating habits. When my daughter tried to explain that a balance of regular snacks is vital in avoiding a hypoglycaemia they said that diabetes is a result of the issues mentioned above i.e poor diet etc. I have to say that a little knowledge is a very dangerous thing!!
