hello! my son, who is almost two was just diagnosed with dispraxia. he is atleast a year behind in speech, and doesn't like touching things that are fuzzy or messy. he walked when he was about 14 mos old. otherwise...he is developmentally on cue. my understanding is that this condition is basically an "immaturity" neurologically and affects the signals from the brain to the mouth in his case, and is related to sensory disorders as well. ****he began speech therapy JUST YESTERDAY, and already is doing so well! he can already sign "more", "my turn", and "all done"! i have changed the way we play...as his toys were all scattered about and he could get to them as he wanted. i took some of his faves and put them in clear tupperware containers...now he has to communicate to get them, which he does by taking me to the box and signing "more"...we play, using "my turn" and "his turn", and "all done" when we are done and put them back. it made me feel bad to box them up, but he actually seems to enjoy the structure! lots of praise is most important!!!!! he is much less frustrated and has so much fun playing with me now. what a relief and great start. playdough, sand, and paint is helping him, too. already he is mushing playdough, playing in his containers of sand, and today he fed himself spaghetti!!!! good luck to all those who are searching for anwers...there IS hope...and we as parents and close caregivers are the key! everyone must play the same and talk to him the same for it to work well....get your child evaluated so that you can CORRECTLY help and begin helping them...God Bless our children for being so amazing! DK
