I'm still a little bit confused why this absolutely unbelievably AWESOME album has been out for nearly 10 years yet it still remains UNAVAILABLE for online downloading or streaming through my online service of choice, Musicmatch. Not sure if it's available on the others, but Musicmatch doesn't have it (perhaps I should take it up with them, hmmmm). Guess I'll just have to continue taking my CD everywhere I go.... but on a better note, thanks guys for an incredible album! I remember the day it came out, and exactly how I felt the first time I listened to it, on the way home from the music store. Awesome. Best song: Don't Be Down On Me, Baby. I'm surprised I didn't ruin my CD by playing that track as often as I did. :-) And I dreamed of watching Stevie perform it live someday. (sigh)

What a comeback! Thank you Steve for doing that!!! You have so much to share that is inside of you... What an album.
My only complaint was the choice of the producer. I feel that you guys could have produced this album yourselves and still would have recieved awards for doing it. I think that many of the techniques the producer used limited you guys and some of the sound suffered. I especially do not like the way "When You Love A Woman" was mastered. It comes out sounding like someone was rocking on a squeaky toy in the background.."When You love a woman (Squeak) da da da da da da da (squeak)..When you love a woman(squeak) etc. etc. Once again a great song suffered because of the mix and mastering. Some of the sonic clarity suffers too in the final mix.. maybe it's because the producer wore out the master originals. Once again Great songs badly produced.

On the recommendation of Steve Perry who thinks this is their best work I went and bought the cd and I have to agree with him. It has some different sounds than what Journey had done in the past but I love listening to it especially with the excellant vocals of Steve. His singing just get better with age. I totally recommend it!!

"Trial by Fire" is one of the better CD than have had the luck to buy and to listen. It is noted that Steve is more adult by his voice. Is thicker, more "ronquita", more "varonil", but always charming and "cautivante". The songs are really beautiful. It listen once, and again, and again, I do not tire to listen it. The most melodic songs fascinate me above all as "When you love to woman", "It's just the rain". It is fantastic the effect that they put it al term of the song. Is all a success the production of this CD.

There are positive points and negative points to everything in life, and Journey's reunion album, "Trial By Fire," is no exception.

Track one, "Message of Love," is a great rocker. It has really good vocal and guitar. Steve Perry and Neal Schon are at their best.

Track two, "One More," is a really good song. Another good Steve Perry/Neal Schon collaboration with great vocal and guitar.

Track three, "When You Love A Woman," is right up there, and I believe that with songs like "Message of Love" and "When You Love A Woman," if Journey had toured to promote the album, they would be as big now as they were twenty (20) years ago because "When You Love A Woman" has the three elements that made Journey such a great band -- great vocal, great guitar and great piano.

Track four, "If He Should Break Your Heart," is a great mid-tempo ballad, reminiscent of Frontiers' big hit, "Send Her My Love;" It has really good vocal and guitar.

Track five, "Forever In Blue" is a great rocker. In fact, "Forever In Blue" is my favorite song on the album because it has the best of the two (2) essential elements that equal Journey -- great vocal and great guitar.

Track six, "Castles Burning," has pretty good vocals; although, what I like best about the song is Neal Schon's killer guitar riff at the end of the song.

Track 7, "Don't Be Down On Me, Baby," is an OK ballad. It has a good vocal and guitar, but it isn't the best on the album.

"Track eight, "Still She Cries," is a pretty good ballad, but I think that it's too slow.

"Track nine, "Colors of The Spirit," starts out slow, but it builds with great vocals and a great guitar solo. A nice mid-tempo ballad.

Track ten, "When I Think Of You," is an a good ballad ballad. I like it better than "Still She Cries."

Track eleven, "Easy To Fall," has great guitar and piano.

Track twelve, "Can't Tame The Lion," is a great rocker. I really like Neal Schon's guitar and Steve Perry's vocal on this one.

Track thirteen, "It's Just The Rain," has great lead vocal and great piano. Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain are at their best as a duo on this one.

Track fourteen, "Trial By Fire," is a pretty good title track for this album; although, even though it's good, because of the ballads that precede it, it seems watered down by now.

Overall, an OK Journey; although, I feel it could be better. The only thing going for it is that it has some jazzy guitar on the "Trial By Fire track," the beginning of the album rocks you into the mood, and it's a nice farewell to frontman, Steve Perry's, twenty-year Journey with the group. But, keep listening because there's a really cool surprise on the album (a hidden track), but I won't give it away. It's a nice end for Journey's Steve Perry era. Enjoy!

Still She Cries is a "pretty good ballad"??!!
Still She Cries is AWESOME - I would say a GREAT song, not "pretty good".
It's Just The Rain is also "great" - although these are both slow songs, they are Journey classics.
Castles Burning is the kick ass rocker on the album...
Trial By Fire is GOLD - thank you to Neal, Jon, Ross, Steve and of course Steve for this beautiful recording.
I listen to this cd EVERY DAY!

tracks 10 and 11 sound like songs that perry and schon maybe would have put together back during infinity, departure era.can really tell smith and valory spent years complementing each other.journey who i've seen on their last 2 tours need to really soul search and decide whether its really worth(i dont think so)touring without steve p.....do you think that would ever be possible?

Actually, I disagree. "Trial By Fire" is the best ballad of the entire album, if not the best song. The lyric is more poetic and the melody and the vocal is strong and memorable. Neals jazzy guitar really shines here. I heard a live version on JIFR internet radio sung by Steve Augueri in the 2001 arrival tour; the live version of this song was much more spiritual and has a requiem like quality to it. It was very moving emotionally to hear it live and I think that it is actually a nice song to dedicate to the 9/11 victims and families. It's too bad Steve Perry is not there to sing it because it would be even better with Steve Perry's stronger and more emotional vocals.

I love the entire CD, all the songs blend really well and showcase the talents of them all, especially Steve Perry! I really wish the band could have toured and promoted this wonderful music(with Steve Perry, of course), it would have been an even bigger smash. Steve Perry is the best! Love that man!

I just wanted to say that I recently bought the Trial By Fire CD and it rocks! I keep it in my headset all day long at work, I just can't put it down. My favorite song is Message of Love. It really makes me miss Steve Perry being in the band!

This album is almost up there with Escape/Frontiers
When you love a woman - great vocal (as Expected)
Don't be down on me baby - superb song
Still she cries - 2nd best song on album - piano is fantastic
Colors of the spirit - unusual song but i like it loads
When i think of you - best journey ballad ever (memories of past love). Does anyone agree?
Easy to fall - Perry again at his best
It's just the rain - how can journey put so many superb ballads on one album......absolutely amazing
Trail by fire - Springsteeny anyone else think this?
Baby i'm leaving you - This proves Steve Perry could have been any singer he wanted to be. He has to be the best male singer ever.Rock ,Ballads ,you name it, he excels.
As for all the rock songs on the album are ok but no where as good as Don't stop believing, Dixie Highway etc.
Overall i'd give 9/10. excellent.
