Thanks for posting, i went to your site, that pix of the tower at ARP is great i raced at ARP in the late '60s i had a street '55 chevy, my dad had a pickup truck and we would hook up a tow bar and pull it flat to ARP. I really liked the pix of George Cox, i was with Cox and Rousey when they teamed up, with the '69 AMX pro stocker, and helped on their pit crew very little when they had the top fuel car. i have some pix of ARP from'68 with pix of Butch Lake and a '41` willys gasser. thanks Hobie

I just found this forum it's great to see the intrest in old drag racing. I saw a couple of post about Butch Lake and I had to call him and tell him to about the site. My Father was George Cox and I love reading about old racing stuff. So anybody out there that has any stories they would like to share about my Father I'd love to hear them.
Thank,
Dana Cox

I knew your father well along with many of his "running buddies". He,along with August Hartkopf,Fred Rowsey,Linford McLemore,Joe Angel & others.
I'm 64 yrs. old & with the knowledge & spirit left by the likes of your Dad, I'm building what is probably my last racecar (sort of a "social security special").
I've been in touch with one of your Dad's good friends (Kenneth Wilson) who lives in Dale Tx. just outside Austin. He's in the phonebook. Perhaps you would give him a ring someday...it could be a hoot.
I've lived in the New Braunfels area for about 18 yrs.,& survived a liver transplant,grown "older"& am just happy to "be here".
Rest assured when I fire up & start to race my lil' pro street hot rod next spring, I'll be thinking of "the good ol' days" & your Pop.
Keep the Faith;
John Mason

Misty, I knew Linford very well. Began racing with Linford in the late 50's when he raced the yellow 37 or 38 Chevy, went to Green Valley to the AHRA Nationals (1960 or 61). Six of us stayed in a old travel trailer. I slep out side on a cot and some of the guys got up early and moved my cot, with me still in it, to the starting line. Was I surprised when I woke. Linford then moved to B/Roaster and held the AHRA ET record for two years (10:71). Then moved to A/Gas Dragster.
Blown Olds. I believe it was 1965 or 66 AHRA Nationals at Green Valley when he blew the engine and had a hole in the side of the block about 6 inches round. I lost touch with Linford about then, moved out of Austin and he and I also had a disagreement about an engine I purchased from him. We traveled many many miles togrether racing all over Texas, Arziona, LA. and N. Mex. from the late 50's to the mid 60's. Had a lot of good times.

........ I didn't get to Austin until the early 70s. My first pass down Austin Race Way was in my 64 Cuda - -out ran C R Damsby that evening - - course at that time the track had closed down and the street racers would run up there on Saturday night ....
I found this sight by accident the other day and the memories have been flowing sence then ... Names like Lenford and Larry - G. Cox ..Guy Morngan ..Bruce Hobbs .. Jake Campbell ..and Sandy Land !
I started running with Butch Lake when he and Sandy Land were building the Mustang Pro Stocker,they worked out of and old shed in south Austin .. I was a member of Butch's team through the Anglea C gasser that ruled Little River and was in Hot Rod magizine (artcile of race at Dallas) I was there through the campaine of the 69 AMX G modified car .. loved that car !! I remember things like when Joe White put a small block into the Mustang and called it a Horse with No Name ... I remember the night Butch and I went to Lenford's Shop to see their (first) just completed Funny car chassis - - Lenford's shop was just across Lamar form Butch's - -we would lock up the doors and run across the street every time we heard the Banchee wail ;-) I could go on for hours, with names like Greg Small and the first 70 1/2 Z-28 ... street races either with Butch's Camero or my Cuda ... and wonderful weekends racing across Texas ..all great memories .... can anyone here give me an address or phone number to contact Butch ??

Dana, I knew George well. He sold me 3 X 2 carbs for my 348 Chevy back in 1961. At that time the racing team was Haydon and Cox. They held the AHRA speed record for C/Gas Dragster(130.43) and ET record (10:18)set at Corpus Christi Dragway on 8-26-62. I was there. Haydon worked for So.West Bell Telephone and moved to Arzonia in the mid 60's. I moved from Austin about then also. The last time I talked with George was about the mid 70's when he worked on my wife's van at the old shop down on 1'st street. ( I think it was on 1'st) Lots of fun at thoes old drag strips!!
