He is only a shadow of his
former self.
His thoughts weave in and
out of the present at dizzying
speed, and the absence of joy
and the terrors of the night
mar his slim hold on life.

He smiles when I ask him how
he is today, and he answers "my
mother says I can go out and play
later."

He is 83 years old, and on occasion
he is himself again.
He sometimes looks at my with
recognition, calls my name
and asks me what time it is..
I always give him the same answer..
What do you think it is,
and he tells me.
