Subject: Almost Autumn

It was almost autumn,
yet the leaves were still strongly attached to the trees.
Priming themselves for upcoming winter,
they dressed in a variety of shades,
reminding me of the many colorful options
I had to select from
in my preparation for the future.

Like the shedding of autumn leaves,
we were peeling away the covers one blanket at a time,
unveiling a new day.
Fear and excitement walked hand in hand.
Though afraid of leaving my cushy childhood,
a place where time had stood still,
I was excited to be on my own
for the very first time.
It never occurred to me then,
that you were fighting back tears
as you drove many miles to an empty nest.
You too, were excited and frightened for me,
but you met the challenge
with elegance and strength,
and kindly passed that ability on to me.

A warm wind was blowing
the day we said our emotional goodbyes.
Standing with my heart in my throat
and tears raining down my cheeks,
I waved goodbye to my childhood,
as I watched your car disappear down the road.

Walking in the direction of tomorrow,
I stepped into the role of college student.
I would learn and grow with your strength,
while your guidance was waiting and lonely for me at home.
My life was a developing photograph,
changing colors like the leaves.
I tiptoed softly and steadily into adulthood,
proudly managing to mature into a near replica
of a once-young version of you.
I raked in the leaves of change
piling them higher and higher,
just to have to wind shift and scatter them again
without regard to their direction.
I swished along in the swirling leaves toward the future…
each day ripening to a more vibrant hue.
