No definitive answer, but if I were to have a guess at it, I suspect that a). CBS might have wanted a black regular cast member on the show (maybe there were some complaints?), b). maybe they were able to hire Ronalda for less money than Joanna P. had been making, c). maybe the network just wanted something "new" to make it obvious to the kids that these were all-new episodes and not reruns.
