Yes, they could and they were. When you have a copyright holder who has a disdain for the material (Hallmark), it's never good. After they transferred the episodes to digibeta for British syndication, Hallmark DESTROYED the original film prints. Since none of the morals were used in syndication, they disappeared with the original films.

ALL of the morals were destroyed. The reason that some (but not all) of the season 1 morals are on the DVD is that off-air copies (and a few collector 16mm prints) were found and loaned to BCI to make copies.

MOST of those morals came from Joanna Pang's off air betamax tapes, which she and I copied and loaned to BCI to use. Naturally, Joanna didn't have any interest in preserving the episodes that she did not appear in (remember, blank tapes were about $15 each in the '70s). Several of the others came from me, which I acquired in tape trades over the years.

Now, it's POSSIBLE that someone, somewhere, taped the season 2 shows off-air during the '70s and still has them somewhere (or an odd 16mm print with the moral not edited out might still be floating in film collector circles), but no one ever came forward in the short window of time that BCI had to get these materials together.
