Subject: About the PAL issues
In reply to: Shazam Forever! 's message, "I hate to bother you guys with this question AGAIN (re: PAL)" on 16:57:30 07/27/07 Fri

I haven't received my complimentary set yet, but I can tell you that if the PAL transfers were made straight from the original 16mm films (which I think they would've been), then yes, the sound will
play 4% faster than you would have heard on CBS. This affects ALL of the other 16mm Filmation shows (ARK II, SPACE ACADEMY and JASON OF STAR COMMAND) that belong to Entertainment Rights.

Unfortunately, for American DVD release, they had to convert the PAL transfers BACK to NTSC, so you would THINK it's a "double" conversion, but really, it's not, as the PAL masters came from film (not NTSC), so visually, it's really only seen as a single standards conversion.

Visually, there is also going to be some "motion blur" on fast action. This is probably more easily recognisable on GHOST BUSTERS (yes, Hallmark lost/ditched the original NTSC 2" studio tapes so in the case of THAT series, there really IS a double conversion: NTSC to PAL to NTSC). I will say, though, that for being double conversions, GHOST BUSTERS doesn't look all that bad.

The Hallmark conversions were done with professional, broadcast-standard (at the time, circa 1990) equipment. You needn't be too concerned about picture quality. This is the BEST you will have ever seen these episodes. NO bootleg would ever have come close. The dupes from collector's 16mm copies don't come close (most of the faded, dirty, etc). The audio, to me, isn't noticeable enough to be much of a distraction. For the cheap price (about $16 if you shop around), this should be a no-brainer.
