Subject: about the PAL issues...

As everyone here probably knows, Hallmark was NOT a good steward as far as the Filmation material was concerned. In fact, the higher-ups had contempt for the properties. When the live-action shows were plucked for broadcast on British TV, Hallmark only did PAL-format transfers of the original 16mm films, as they had no intention of US distribution. They probably only did these transfers as the British broadcasters needed the episodes on a more modern digital tape format.

Shamefully, it appears that Hallmark destroyed all the original films after this transfer was done. Entertainment Rights do not have ANY original 16mm prints for the live-action Filmation shows. The digital PAL masters from the 1990s are all that (officially) exists, apart from scattered prints floating around in film collector circles.

What we must ALL bear in mind is this:

A). This is not Entertainment Rights' (OR BCI/Eclipse's) fault. What ER has provided to BCI is really all that they have.

B). Even though the DVD image will be an NTSC-from-PAL transfer, the picture will be WAY better than ANY of the bootleg/fan copies that have been doing the rounds.

C). BCI have gone to great lengths to include bonus materials on the discs.

D). These sets are INEXPENSIVE! Ark II could be had for less than $16.00 some places. Last year, you'd have had to pay FAR more than that for crappy nth-generation recordings.

Is the loss of the 16mm originals regretabble? Sure, but don't blame BCI or ER. At least they're making an effort to get this material out there, and in better quality than any fan has ever had in his or her collection.
