This description seems to remind me of an series that was shown on the Skatebirds which was Hanna Barabera's attempt to make a remake of the Banana Spilts show. It had animated cartoons segments in between the goofy antics of the Skatebirds. The live action series they had was Mysterious Island. I think the cast was two guys, a woman and a robot.
