Hi I read about the help you provided via internet. I am writing you this email to see if you can shed some light to my situation. I will start from the beginning so you have the full details of the situation. In DECEMBER of 2006, my fiancé and I broke up after 6 years. Okay, well on DECEMBER 20TH, I had sexual relations with someone else which the “pull out” method was used. I was very scared and ashamed so I went to plan parenthood and took Plan B. On January 7th,2007 I had a menstrual period that was shorter and lighter then normal. HOWEVER, I do have irregular periods. Well at the beginning of February I noticed that my breast were enlarging (to me) and then I experienced some light brown spotting for 1 day. Well I was cramping and cramping but never started my period so on February 25th, I took a pregnancy test that came back positive. I immediately scheduled a Dr’s appointment for the next day because I feared I may be having a miscarriage. I had an ultrasound done that dated me at 7 weeks 3 days pregnant. My questions are: 1) Could the Plan B that I took, have effected my menstrual I had on 1/7/07. 2) How accurate are first trimester ultrasounds? 3) What are the possibilities it could be the other mans. 4) when would conception have occurred? I am very scared as to who the father is. In order for it to be the other guys, the ultrasound would have to be off by 4 weeks. And I didn’t experience any pregnancy symptoms in the month of January. Please help me ease my mind, I would GREATLY appreciate it!

Hi, Brandi,

You are mostly asking medical questions, and we're not doctors! I don't know the answers to your questions. First trimester ultrasounds are probably not all that accurate because the baby is still pretty small. I wouldn't bet the farm on an ultrasound telling me the correct age at any stage, to be honest. At 7 weeks, your baby's body is complete, just very small.

It's June already. With whom did you have sex in April? If you are 7 weeks, that's when it would have happened.

Plan B wouldn't do your body any good. It's like using an atom bomb to hit an ant. Our bodies' hormones are delicately balanced. So that could easily have thrown a lot of things out of whack, and makes it hard to determine what is really happening with your body.

I am betting you have other issues on your mind. Feel free to let us know what else concerns you.

Hugs,
Pat

Actually, the earlier ultrasounds are more accurate for dating than later ones. Plan B is basically a high dose of an oral contraceptive, and that can definitely affect your periods. At 7 weeks, I seriously doubt your dating will be 4 weeks off. It's usually within 1-2 weeks of the date.

Here is a link on ultrasounds if you want to read more:

If you have any questions or concerns about the dating and timing, it would be good to discuss this with your doctor, But if your ultrasound was done at 7 weeks, and it was 4 weeks off (as in 3 weeks) they would not have seen the embryo on ultrasound most likely.

Does your bf know about the other guy at all? Is that why you are so concerned?

I agree with Mel Early ultrasounds are much more accurate than later ones. In my experience of pregnancy and i have had 5 children. They were usually acurate within 4 days on the two occasions where i have actually known the date of conception.

Hi Brandi,

I too, agree with Melanie; early ultrasounds are pretty accurate as far as dating the pregnancy. They are usually off by only a few days if done early. As the pregnancy progresses, dating becomes less accurate and can then be off by weeks, not days.

Take care,

Shellie
