Subject: Christopher "Crip" McWilliams: Fallen Comrade of the IRSM

Fallen Comrade of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement

Christopher "Crip" McWilliams
Volunteer - Irish National Liberation Army
Died on 28 June 2008

Christopher "Crip" McWilliams was born on 15 December 1963 and grew
up in staunchly republican West Belfast.

His older brother Paul McWilliams was a member of the Provisional
Irish Republican Army's youth wing who was shot dead by the British
Army in 1977 at the age of 16.

Crip joined the INLA in the early 1980s. He was present during an
early morning raid on a flat in the Lenadoon area of West Belfast by
the Royal Ulster Constabulary which left one RUC officer dead and two
wounded, and INLA staff officer Paul "Bonanza" McCann was also killed
by the RUC.

Three men (including Crip and future INLA chief of staff Gino
Gallagher) and a woman who were with McCann were arrested at the scene.

After Crip's release from prison several years later, he became
involved with the Irish People's Liberation Organisation, and was
again imprisoned after another IPLO member killed a bar manager and
Crip was blamed.

Crip re-joined the INLA during his second prison term. While in Long
Kesh Prison, he and two other INLA volunteers undertook the risky but
successful execution of loyalist death squad leader Billy "King Rat"
Wright within the prison on 27 December 1997.

Crip was sentenced to life in prison for the Wright execution, but
under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement he was released in 2000.

Crip died of cancer in Newry at the age of 44.

He died as he lived: a Republican Socialist. Remember him with honour
and pride.
