Maghaberry strip-search concerns

The Derry and N-West Civil Rights’ Network, which includes prominent 1968 activists, has issued a ‘global letter’ aimed at highlight current strip-search procedures at Maghaberry prison. The controversial mail-out, posted mainly on the Internet, asserts, “The current modus operandi is not merely inhumane and degrading, but amounts to torture, plain and simple”.

It states, “In recent times we were publicly assured that strip searches would be replaced by the use of electronic scanning. No doubt many members of the public breathed a sigh of relief that the prison authorities had abandoned their ‘old ways’ of operating.”

Among the first public figure to respond positively was Mr. Pat Ramsey MLA, a leading SDLP figure, who informed the Network “that during recent prison visits, saw the need for certain changes”. Writing to Mr. David Ford, the Minister of Justice at Stormont, he referred to “the plight of Damien McLaughlin who has given, in graphic detail, an idea of brutal treatment endured by him and fellow prisoners as a result of strip searches”.

This Derry MLA enclosed a snippet of the ‘global letter’ to the Minister, and concluded: “Can you investigate this as a matter of some urgency and write to me with the outcome of the investigation. I know we both share a desire to ensure that those in prisons here are treated with respect and dignity, and I sincerely hope that the practices outlined in the letter are not taking place against any guidelines issues by your Department.”

Copies of the Network’s ‘global letter’ and correspondence to the Minister, can be requested from its hon. Secretary via rights.civil@googlemail.com
