Good riddance to Michael McDowell

Every genuine Irish Republican should to-day raise their tea-cup, tumbler or pint glass and declare, “Good Riddance To Michael Mc Dowell”. There has been little to really celebrate in recent times, but the news that he became a big-time loser last night in the General Election in the 26 Cos. makes me feel very happy reading this morning’s papers. The fact that I note that in “conceding defeat in Dublin South East he revealed that he was quitting political life”, makes me even more jubilant. No doubt many others, at home and abroad, will have similar feelings as news spreads of the political death of this Tánaiste, Leader of the mis-named PDs, and former Minister of ‘In’ Justice.

Even letters to this man, appealing to his humanity (not his patriotism-he had none) rarely received the courtesy of even an acknowledgement. One suspects that his eyes were blinkered, his ears open only to what he wanted to hear, but his mouth was always very active, no doubt in the hope that such would increase his popularity. Gladly, he was wrong there also, thanks to the electors of Dublin South East.

His mis-treatment of political prisoners, including his deliberate delays imposed on those in England wishing to be repatriated to be nearer their loved ones in Ireland, will forever be associated with his name. He had the cheek to write that he wouldn’t look at Noel Maguire’s case for twelve months, but in less than half the time he is out of office, and hurray, hurray, out of Irish politics.

Fill up once more, we`ll drink a toast to comrades far away,
No nation on earth can boast of braver hearts than they,
And though they sleep in dungeons deep, or flee outlawed and banned
We love them yet, we can’t forget, the Felons of our Land.
In boyhood’s bloom and manhood’s pride foredoomed by alien laws,
Some on the scaffold proudly died, for holy Ireland’s cause,
And brothers say, shall we, today, unmoved by cowards stand,
While traitors shame and foes defame, the Felons of our Land.
Some in the convicts dreary cell, have found a living tomb,
And some unseen untended fell within the dungeon’s gloom,
But what care we, although it be, trod by a ruffian band,
God bless the clay where rest today the Felons of our Land.
Let cowards mock and tyrants frown, ah little do we care,
A Felon’s cap is the noblest crown an Irish head can wear
And every Gael in Inishfail, who scorn the serf’s vile brand,
From Lee to Boyne, would gladly join the Felons of our Land.
