Author: AOH's ban on Civil Rights
Subject: Suspension should NOW be lifted
In reply to: CKJCampaign Manager 's message, "Re: UNITY-Who's Fooling Who?" on Sat, May 19 2007, 22:18:43 PDT

Last Saturday the AOH permittted what some tabloids claim was a "Dissident Conference". Yet, four years ago as a result of a report in the Sunday World, a co-founder of the civil rights movement in 1967, was very publicly suspended, and one could say slandered. Yet, an unjustifed suspension remains which certainly brings the AOH into disrepute at home and abroad.

The following is taken from CR Vets files, is edited, and was sent to the Secretary of the Derry Div. #1 of the AOH, a few years ago.

February 6, 2005

Secretary,
Derry Div. #1,
AOH Hall,
23 Foyle Street,
Derry City BT48 6AL

Please note, just in case the Arbitration Panel rules against our represenative, for the sake of historical record, we wish the following facts to be placed on your minute book, - that civil rights veterans properly applied for the use of your premises on Feb. 22 of that year, and clearly stated the purpose for the gathering: a civil rights conference on the basis of endeavouring to avoid another hunger-strike in HMP Maghaberry: that such was aimed at securing segregation, with the full backing, as you well know from documents sent to you, of leading civil rights veterans, clergy – including our local Bishop and three prison chaplains- as well as politicians including the leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party. The aim of that civil rights conference, segregation of loyalist and republican prisoners, within seven (7) months was secured by the publication of the Steele Report in September, two years ago.

We also to request, that all correspondence, addressed to you personally, be made available to the Arbitration Penal, before its scheduled meeting. These should include comments from Monsg. Denis Faul, Mrs. Bernedette McAliskey (nee Devlin) and Ms. Marion Price, the national chairperson of the Irish Republican Prisoners’ Welfare Association. These human rights activists have assured us that would correspond with you on this matter.

All those involved in pushing for a resolution to the dangerous and life-threatening situation then prevailing at HMP Maghaberry, will be made aware of this correspondence, and the eventual outcome. As the suspension was made in a very public and arbitrary fashion, no less than a public apology from the Derry Division #1 of the Order, which is the very least that can be expected as a result of such an injustice, instigated it appears, on the sole say-so of the Division #1 president, and without prior contact or dialogue with our suspended rep. or other leading civil rights’ veterans.
