Subject: Irish political prisoners transferred to Belmarsh.

Three of the Irish political prisoners serving sentences in UK prisons have been transferred to Belmarsh High Security Prison in London - and two others are likely to follow soon.

Declan Rafferty and Michael McDonald in Whitemoor Prison, and Fintan O'Farrell in Full Sutton, were transferred to Belmarsh on Wednesday afternoon. It is expected they will remain there for a week or possibly two, then be repatriated to Portlaoise.

It is also expected Aiden Hulme and Robert Hulme will be transferred to Belmarsh in next few weeks - en route to Portlaoise during October.
This will leave Noel Maguire as the only remaining Irish political prisoner in Britain - and concern is growing for his welfare.
Last October Noel suffered severe cuts to his arms and hands following a vicious attack by two inmates wielding knives, and had to be hospitalised as a result.
Despite this, the Irish Ministry of Justice in Dublin have turned down Noel's latest application for repatriation to Ireland on dubious grounds. Noel has no relatives living in Britain. His only relatives live in Ireland - north and south - and are willing to visit should he be repatriated to an Irish prison. Noel is also the holder of an Irish passport which is still valid - issued in Dublin in 1999. There is therefore no valid reason why he should not be allowed to join his comrades in Portlaoise - or any other prison in the 26 Counties.

We have asked the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas
(ICPO) to take up Noel's case with the the Justice Ministry in Dublin - while there is still time to do something - and we await a reply. Meanwhile a series of protests are planned to take place outside the Irish Embassy in London in the coming weeks to draw attention to Noel's plight.
