Civil Rights to Nell

Dear Comrade Nell,

Aiden's letter left out the fact that Noel Maguire has already applied for repatriation, and initially McDowell's stance was that he had NO relatives in Ireland, but the facts are that he is from Co. Fermanagh, and has NO close relatives in Britain. We located his wife and children, and she says that she is prepared to visit him. (text edited out)

He has a sister "M", and I have sent my telephone number to her via contacts in London. I expect her to ring me in the next day or so.

The most recent letter [view next posting] from McDowell's Dept. states that he is not prepared to consider Noel's request for at least the next twelve months. That is very annoying, as there are real fears for Noel's safety. [text edited out] Re. Minister for (IN?) Justice, I believe he's in a huff since we have proven him wrong on his NO RELATIVES IN IRELAND claim.

I will keep you posted, as I am hoping to engage the NI Human Rights Commission & the Irish Council for Civil Liberties next week. Durkin is already in touch with the family in recent months We need repatriation to be an AUTOMATIC RIGHT. Prisoners and their loved ones having to wait FOUR years is outlandish. The Brits, as recent cases show on the Continent, have had their "hooligans" et al back on their own soil often within twelve months.

There should have been a fast-track facility for the likes of Aiden Hulme. What that man has suffered I find painful even to contemplate. No wonder he has a medical neglect case against the prison system in the pipeline. His treatment in Portlaoise at lease is humane, and shows up just what its all about to be Irish, in prison, in England.

More info from here if you need such. Regards-FINN-DERRY.

In what way is Noel Maguire "apparently a political hostage as well? Is Aiden Hulme being sarcastic ? Does the civil right movement wish us to do something about mr maguire? PLEASE clarify, and save us all the wasted time of writing several letters rtrying to find out what is going on here.

LETTER TO EDITORS / & TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.

Repatriated Prisoner's thanks

To all my friends and supporters here in Ireland, in
Britain, the USA and Sweden, through your columns, I send them
New Year greetings and good wishes for 2007. I wish also to thank
several journalists, human rights and civil liberties groupings at home and
abroad, who were alerted to my plight, by such voluntary bodies as
the civil rights veterans' network based in Derry City.

My brother Robert and I have settled in well on E-3
Wing since our arrival here last month. The men here -
and on the other wings - have been very supportive and
welcoming, and the medical treatment I am receiving
for my injured leg is more than adequate.

In due course I am to be moved to Portlaoise hospital
for more tests, and the medical people here assure me
more can and will be done to help me walk again. That's
in sharp contrast to what I was told in Full Sutton
prison last year - that no more could, or would be
done - for my injury, and that I would probably lose
my leg. I believe now that if my repatriation had not
happened my medical condition - and my health
generally - would have greatly deteriorated.

I know many people campaigned for me over the years I
spent in England's jails. To them I send my profound
thanks and appreciation. To the organisations and
groups that never failed to highlight my situation
with protests and pickets in Dublin, Chicago, London and
New York etc I include all in my thanks.

Many people helped raise my morale by keeping in
regular contact with me, with letters and cards at
Christmas and Easter. I would like them to know their
thoughtfulness was appreciated at the time - and
although I didn't always reply to them individually -
those letters on many occasions raised my spirits in
no small way when I was feeling low.

I would like specifically to thank individuals like Diana in
New York, who has kept up a regular correspondence
with me with letters and cards etc.

Thanks also to Terry Gavin in London for her letters and
postage stamps etc, they were always welcome, and
thanks to Fionnbarra in Derry for his Trojan work and
intervention on my behalf on numerous occasions.

I wish you all a very happy New Year, and I sincerely
hope you will all continue to remain in contact with
me, as I greatly value your friendship, even though I have never
met many of you.

Please remember also Noel Maguire, now isolated and vulnerable
in Full Sutton Prison where he was subjected to an unprovoked life-threatening attack and hospitalised in October 2005. Noel is currently not only the last remaining Irish POW in England, but is now apparently a political hostage as well. His most recent repatriation application should be reviewed immediately as a matter of urgency, not least by Justice Minister Michael McDowell TD, but also Dublin-based civil servants in his department and those in Foreign Affairs.
