Subject: PIRA founder chairs Derry anti-PSNI meeting

IRISH NEWS, Thursday, Jan. 18th. 2007 - Report by N-W Correspondent-Seamus McKinney

Kelly chairs meeting of anti-police protestors

VETERAN REPUBLICAN John Kelly last night gave his support to the anti-police movement in Derry.

Mr. Kelly chaired a meeting called to discuss Sin Fein moves to support policing.

The meeting was organised by a number of groups including dissident republicans and the IRSP.

The third in a series of meetings, the attendance at last night’s discussion was significantly higher than at similar events in Toomebridge and Belfast.

Approximately 400 people packed Derry’s Tower Hotel for the meeting. It was also addressed by former Sinn Fein Ard Comhairle member Gerry McKeogh and Francie Mackie of the 32-County Sovereignity Movement.

Sinn Fein and the SDLP declined to send representatives.

Speaking after the meeting, former SF assembly member Mr. Kelly urged republicans not to give their support to the PSNI

Footnote: IA-PL activists reported to our main workstation – ia_pl32@hotmail.com- that Mrs. Peggy O’Hara, and several well-known veterans of earlier struggles were also in attendance. Our comrades say that there was standing room only, and the attendance was easily 400+. Many complained by phone and e-mail to-day that they were unaware that the meeting was taking place, and asked the IA-PL to make sure that in the future, such meetings are highlighted on STORMONT-WATCH, and if possible, if time permits, by personal e-mails or phone calls. This shows that the lines of communication amongst all opposed to the PSNI , needs to be immediately reviewed and improved. Others, externally, also share this responsibility, which should not be left at the hands of the hard-working few who staff our main workstation.

EXTRA REPORT – Derry news, Thursday Jan 18th 2007
Report by Darinagh Boyle

‘In the name of my son’

THE MOTHER of Derry hunger-striker Patsy O’Hara will contest the Assembly elections as an independent republican candidate.

Peggy O’Hara has added her name to a growing list of republican opposed to the pledge made by the Sinn Fein leadership giving conditional support to the PSNI.

The move comes about ahead of a visit to Derry by the Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams this day week before 2,000 members gather for a special Ard Fhies on policing.

The 76-year-old republican won the backing of the Ard Comhairle of the IRSP, the political wing of the INLA at a meeting on Saturday.

Mrs. O’Hara claimed her son Patsy, who died after 61 days on hunger-strike, would not have supported Sinn Fein’s policing strategy.

Abused

The hunger-striker had been severely abused by the RUC while still in his teens during a transfer from Ballykelly to Long Kesh, she said.

“We didn’t recognise the police then and we won’t recognise them now. I decided to run because of what the police did to Patsy. When he was taken from Ballykelly to Long Kesh they burned his lovely face with cigarettes….

“No one has come to me and asked me what I think of the policing debate. I am standing in memory of Patsy”.
