From rights.civil@googlemail.com

SEASONAL GREETINGS TO ALL WHO READ THIS COMMUNICATION-LET US ALL INCREASE OUR EFFORTS, ON THE HAMANITARIAN AND CIVIL LIBERTIES FRONTS AS A NEW YEAR DAWNS. WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERANCE - MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT THAT!

The October 5th Assoc., a global independent network of 1968 civil rights veterans and supporters, early in 2007, will launch a campaign calling for an in-depth review/update on the recommendations of the Steel Report, which in September of that year followed the Feb. 22nd 2003 Conference at the AoH Hall, in Derry. We must also acknowledge the work of others, including friends in America, local politicians, church representatives and agencies such as the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas based in Maynooth.

A letter is being drafted over the Christmas period, and it is planned to send one to Peter Hain, the British colonial Secretary of State for the Six Counties. Others within our extensive network of contacts will also be e-mailed details on this and other campaigns. Those, not already on our e-mail contacts lists should join by sending a brief message to rights.civil@googlemail.com

We greatly welcome the return to Ireland of two brothers, both political prisoners, Aidan & Robert Hulme earlier this month. We will continue to express concern for the welfare of the sole remaining Irish political prisoner in an English jail, Noel Maguire, and greatly welcome others working in solidarity on the repatriation front, made possible by EU Human Rights legislation in recent years. Such, in our opinion, has been frustrated and undermined in recent years, not least by the current Minister for Justice and Law Reform in the 26-counties.
