I was on both those cruises. I was with the party from Methody and I can not for the life of me remember how we got from Belfast to Tilbury for the 73 cruise. I'm sure we left from there but I could be wrong. I remember dreadful sickness for the first day or so then a great time on my first trip away from my parents aged 15. I too met up with a Canadian girl, Gail, who I remember well.

The 75 trip did have issues if I remember right and your teacher Mr Gowdy? struggled to keep control. I did get my head kicked in very early on when valour got the better part of discretion but it was a lesson well learned and stood me in good stead in the future:-) Strangely because I had stood up for a mate I seemed to have earned some level of respect and had no more trouble from anyone.

I think these trips were great, real eye openers in many ways but I wonder in todays safety conscious times if it would be possible to have such a wonderful experience. I certainly don't think kids would be allowed to roam Tangier as we did at the time. As a 17 year old I was given responsibility for younger kids when we were ashore and I really think that stood to me in my future career. It was certainly my first experience of responsibility of that level.

Good luck to you all.
