At the age of 13 years I was very privalaged to be able to go on the SS Uganda Baltic cruise from Bucklers Mead School Yeovil on June 24th 1969. I think we were the first party of school children to go to Leningrad and on our way we sailed through Danish islands. On our approach to Leningrad at approximately 5am a piolet boarded to ensure our safe arrival, unfortunatly we ended up on a sand bank, and as we were in our bunks at the "pointy end" we felt the full force of the impact. As we were all "dislodged" from our bunks we all decided to get dressed (dispite the unearthly hour) and go up on deck, to our surprise we were now clear of the sand bank and sailing past what seemed like thousands of submarines and battle ships. On disembarkation we were played ashore by the Red Army Band. On our return to the UK we encountered the worst ever weather the Uganda had ever experienced, I have actually saved newspaper cuttings of the time which discribes the day to day events of the cruise and one report says that out of 960 children not one had been sick but I can asure you we proved that reporter wrong.
