I was on the cruise called "The Steps of St Paul", taking in Venice-Cyprus-Greece-Israel-Naples in Christmas 1972 with Honor Oak Grammar School. Prendergast Girls School, Winchester College and a group from a school in Heidleberg, Germany, were among the others. We were supposed to dock in Malta but President Mintoff wouldn't let us in! We went on to have the unforgettable experience of navigating a Force 11 gale in the Bay of Biscay - the worst recorded in the ship's history - spinning round in circles all night, lost, seeing nothing but sky one moment and only sea the next, missing our landing in Sicily altogether and being diverted to our final destination, Naples, where we ended our cruise on a high in Pompeii. 4 of the students were injured in the storm, some requiring stitches. The disco was more interesting than ever as the storm took hold - students ending up in each others' arms who had the least intention to, and being trapped against the wall by flying furniture. All in all a peak experience; does anyone remember this?
