Subject: Christmas/New Year cruise 73/74 West Africa

 I can't see any posts about this cruise, so maybe my memory is failing me. I travelled down to Gatwick overnight with a group of children from Codsall Comprehensive School, Staffs. Flew to Tangier on a Danair flight, where we joined the Uganda. Our first port of call should have been Agadir, but bad weather diverted us to Gibraltar. From there we had three or four stormy days at sea, before the sun finally appeared on Christmas Eve. Other ports of call were Bathurst/Banjul, Dakar, and Freetown, where a visit to Goree Island, where slaves were shipped to the New World, as described in later years in the Alex Hailey book and TV series Roots, is etched in my memory. I also remember being allowed to stay up past midnight to see in the new year on deck under the stars, with the ships hooters blowing and paper streamers being thrown. Be great to know if anyone else remembers this memorable cruise
