KENYA
(Great Britain)
The s.s. Kenya and her sister-ship, the Uganda, were built to provide an express service between the United Kingdom and East African ports down to Dar es Salaam, via Suez. The Kenya was launched on November 28. 1950. and was completed in July 1951. The Uganda followed one year later. They are owned by British India Steam Navigation Co. From the beginning of 1968, the Uganda will join the Nevasa on the company’s educational cruises, as a replacement for the older Devonia and Dunera.

Builders: Barclay Curie & Co. Ltd., Glasgow
Length Overall: 539 ft. 9 in.
Gross tonnage: 14,464
Breath: 71 ft.
Deadweight: 9,720 tons
Total Passengers : 307
Total crew: 283
Speed : 16 knots

The Kenya combines to an exceptional degree the amenities of the greatest liners with the friendliness and service of smaller ships. It is now a one-class ship, with the result that tourist class passengers enjoy the comfort of the large, formerly first class cabins. Each of these has its own window or porthole and many have private bathrooms.
Public rooms include large drawing and smoking rooms, cocktail bar, writing room and card room, a verandah ballroom, and an air-conditioned dining room which runs the full width of the ship and can accommodate all passengers at one sitting. There is a separate dining saloon for children under 12, a nursery, shop, large sports deck, two swimming pools and cinema.
The main propulsion machinery consists of single reduction geared turbines developing 11,200 s.h.p. and driving twin screws. The hull is white with a black band and black boot-topping. The funnel is black with two white bands close together. The Uganda’s funnel is taller than that of the Kenya.
