Came across your site while Googling SS Unganda. I was on one of the early cruises in 1969 and it is an experience I will never forget. I recently came across my log book, itinerary and even a luggage label while browsing in my loft the other day, I wish I had written more than the first two days in the log, but from that I can definitely say we flew out from Gatwick to Venice on the 11th February 1969. I can still remember the fun we had on the train to Gatwick from Newcastle, it was a corridor train and we were meant to be trying to get some sleep before the flight but we were all too excited. I even came across some postcard I had bought but not sent - I'd even written on a couple of them, and a letter one of my schoolfriends back home had sent to me, I remember receiving this after we docked in Gibralter. Reading this took me back to being a 14 year old schoolgirl again!!.
I'll never forget the site of seeing Uganda berthed in Itea when we made the coach trip up through the olive groves to Delphi, that view was spectacular and one I experienced again a couple of years ago when my husband and I visited Delphi again, I must admit I had a tear in my eye when I looked down.
I still remember dancing to the Beatles "Revolution", my first romance, not to mention my first taste of Retcina in Pireas, (I still think it tastes like vinegar) I remember the caves in Gibratar, the barbary apes stealing our snacks and the thrill of being able to buy a Kit Kat (doesn't take much to please me) I bought Love Affairs album "Everlasting Love Affair" there (still have it somewhere).
I so appreciate my parents allowing me to go on the "School Cruise" I remember them saving so hard so I could have the "Experience of a Lifetime" as they put it they said I might never get the chance again to visit these places. Happily they were wrong and I have managed to visit Venice, Athens, Delphi and Pompeii again. I even managed to get to the top of Vesuvius this time, for some reason we girls were not allowed to go on the trip to the top in 1969 !!! It has been so thrilling to be able to revisit these places each one brought back so many happy memories of the "School Cruise"
Does anyone remember the smell in the corridor by the canteen? I even remember the dormitory "Nansen" and my friend Joan falling out of the top bunk. We had such fun.
I would love to hear from anyone who was on that cruise, I would particularly love to see some photos as mine didn't come out very good.
So many wonderful memories - apart from being very seasick in the Bay of Biscay (seems to be a common thread there) - THANK YOU SS Uganda
