Subject: School Med Cruise March 1979

I sailed on this wonderful ship as part of a 2 week Educational Cruise with Gedling Comprehensive School on March 9th 1979. We flew British Caledonian from Gatwick (the first time on a plane for many of us) to Marco Polo Airport, Venice, where we embarked the Uganda. We sailed to Itea/Delphi/Piraeus/Thessaloniki/Istanbul/Santorini and then on to Malta before flying back home.

Things I still, and will probably always, remember:

* Being woken up with "The Reveille Rock" playing loudly on the juke box each morning!

* The really salty water in the swimming pool on deck.

* Lying in my bunk feeling ill one morning - a combination of sea sickness and eating too much Turkish Delight the night before!

* Somehow managing to buy a bottle of ouzo at a cafe in Thessaloniki along with a few packs of the ouzo sweets which we 'smuggled' into our dorm - named 'Vasco Da Gama' dorm.

* One of my school mates (John?) exchanging a pair of his denim jeans for a full length black leather coat at a bazaar in Istanbul - apparently denim was a rare commodity there at that time.

* Hearing the sad news that Richard Beckinsale had passed away as we were waiting at the harbourside in Valletta, Malta after disembarking the Uganda for the last time. An emotional day all round.

* The fab girls from a school in Scarborough who stayed in our dormitory, some of whom I kept as penpals for a few years afterwards.

Great times and fantastic memories. So sad to hear how the ss Uganda ended her days and I feel very privileged to have sailed on her. Would love to hear from anyone who might have been on this same cruise.
