Subject: National Trust for Scotland cruises

In 1980 I took my first overseas holiday on SS Uganda.

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) had used her and her predecessors for many years to provide an affordable chance for a group to visit places that were of interest in a friendly atmosphere, letting both the cabins and the schoolchildrens' dormitories to adults.

I went "Dormitory class" on a cruise from Dundee to Narvik, Nordfjord, Tromso, Molde, Bergen and back to Bergen.

The NTS staff were always helpful and the entertainment on board (always with a Scottish theme) first class. Everyone "mucked in" and helped marshal us "dormitory class" passengers in for meals - even Rev Currie, one of the NTS speakers, with his gentle banter.

Perhaps the worst part of that first cruise was the first night when we sailer through force 9 -> 10 gales. The following morning I was one of the few to breakfast (and proud of it). My downfall came during the morning when I went to a lecture presented by a gentleman using 3D slides that needed polarising glasses to see the image. Try keeping your head at the correct angle when your seat is rolling on rough seas. I was VIOLENTLY sick just after the lecture :-(

Despite the above, all of my memories are of a happy holiday and looking forward to the next year.

The following year (1981) the NTS cruise took us to Vlissingen, the Baltic and Copenhahen.

For me the three highlights of that holiday were:-
1) Meeting Sheila, a lovely girl from Stirling
2) Visiting Tivoli Gardens inCopenhagen & waling "home" to the Uganda with Sheila by my side at night.
3) visiting Berlin after a l o n g train journey - this was in the days when it was a divided city.

Sadly, due to the Falklands conflict the 1982 holiday was cancelled and NTS never resurected those cruises with a more affordable price tag :-(
