Hi,

Found my old "The Young Mariner's Cruise Journal" ( Very Empty ) Booklet the other day from my time i spent on the
SS Uganda in May 1980, along with my outward flight boarding/luggage slip, some Photo's & The Plastic Wall Plaque our Dorm won for best kept Dormitory ( eek - How embarrassing at the time was that or what ! ).

The Dormitory was : Mungo Park, Named After... Yeah you guessed it :) Mungo Park... Who's Mungo Park i hear you ask... http://www.nndb.com/people/574/000096286/ for more info.

Anyhow, I thought it would be interesting to look up some infomation about the SS Uganda and after a little searching... I found this site... Nice One :)

We took a Laker Airways DC10 ( who had a bad reputation at the time for safe flying abilities ) from Gatwick at 5.40pm on 13/05/80 ( Seat 29B ) landing at Athens a few hour's later, then took a coach trip though Athens at Night ( Very Busy ) to board the ship. Not Sure of the Cruise Number i was on though ( If anyone can help, that would be cool ).

If Memory serves, the route we took was:-
Athens ( Greece ) -
Volos ( Greece ) -
Izmir ( Turkey ) -
Siracusa ( Sicily ) -
Tunis ( Tunisia ) -
Gibraltar -
Lisbon ( Portugal ) -
Then back home to Southampton in the UK via "The Bay Of Biscay" ... Which reminds me of a game we played: "The spot the person NOT being sick competition" - It was ROUGH, as i'm sure some of you also experienced.

One thing i remember whilst onboard was that we didn't do much of the educational thang, it was more about messing around
( and NOT getting caught ! ) and having lot's of fun ( Onboard & Off ) and we did :).

The Food, was BAD in a big way, including those Packed Lunches we were given. Ended up buying food ashore ( although we were told not to do this of course ). And what was that smell in the canteen room ?

Juke Box Favourite Song ( at the time ) was: Rush - The Spirit of Radio.
Juke Box Pet Hate was: Dexys Midnight Runners - Oh Geno.
Worst song to ever play on a ship ? = Rod Stewart - Sailing.

Thinking of the SS Uganda brings back some great memories - A time of innocence and wonder for sure.

Found some Photo's and other Info regarding the SS Uganda Here :

"THE POSTER" a little way down the page i'm sure will be of interest to many of you ( Click it for a larger view ).

Everybody after 3 ... 1 - 2 - 3 " We are sail..... " NO NO NO Stop !!!!! ahhhhhh
.
