I was lucky enough to go on a school cruise aboard the SS Uganda too... great memories. I was with Beaufort Second School, from Southbourne in Bournemouth, Dorset. The school no longer exists, just like the Uganda!

Right now I cannot remember what year it was though, but I was either 3rd or 4th year at secondary and I left in 1981, so I am presuming it was 1979/80.

I remember that we had to fly to Naples where we boarded the Uganda. We went to The Acropolis in Athens, Haifa, Kos, Mycenae, Epidaurus and Venice.. probably elsewhere but right now I cant remember! God, so young then, so much older now! I am 45 next week! Where have those years vanished?

Anyway, the difference with this cruise was that for some reason we couldnt dock at Egypt, so we missed out on that country totally. (Do not recall why, but have a feeling it was something to do with bad weather, but could be wrong there!) That is something I always regretted... but we did have two days in Israel instead! Visited the Wailing Wall, Bethlehem (Church of the Holy Nativity) then later on I am pretty sure it was the Garden of Gethsemane and Nazareth.

I had a photo taken with some soldiers just by the wailing wall with my friend Jane Newton. We were always after the opposite sex! :D I also remember buying a very smelly clay drum with leather skin and a 'toy' leather smelly camel!! Oh and a 50p drum on a stick which had strings either side and a bead on it. You had to twizzle it in your hand and the strings/beads hit the face of it. There was such a rush to buy it, the seller got over run and I think he let go of more than he had money for!

I remember the pens with the ship floating through it..I had one of those. I remember the indian guy who served soup. Every day we would ask, what soup is it today...(cause you might have eaten it and STILL not known!!) and every day that funny man, with a deep and colourful expressions said... 'DONKEY SOUP!' Crikey, he might have even been telling the truth!! I can still see him now!

I also remember someone getting hold of 'double strength' Oozo in Greece.. oh bloody hell!!! I remember our dorms were below decks, hot, horrid and very noisy with the engines. I remember getting involved with a cute and very blonde boy from a school in Beaminster, cannot remember his name though! :D If thats you.. sorry!

Fortunately I was never sick, but I remember sick bags being thrown over board and being thrown back (up one level) in the wind!!!!! YUCK..... I also have a photo of me on deck, in very windy conditions, just sitting down being blown around as I couldnt even stand up...Knowing me and Jane, we were not supposed to have been there at the time!!!

I remember being waved off by my Grandad as the bus went through Tuckton near his home, after it had left my school. He stood on the roundabout to make sure he could do so, bless him. I remember crying that I was leaving, didnt want to go at the last minute, but my Mum said I had to as she had paid for it! LOL.. then I had a whale of a time and cried cause I didnt want to go back!

Happy Days... such a shame they dont do these any more for todays kids!! It certainly gave me the desire for travel. I did that for a little while but my last journey was to move me abroad and now I live in Lapland, Finland. If you were on this particular cruise.. I would love to hear from you!

Michelle
