I too was on the Dec 1980 cruise- with Cantelupe School, Ilkeston Derbyshire. I remember the bad swells, the bad smells, lots of vomit in the dorm, the bent rudder, 'Action Man' - us all missing Egypt out completely, the horrors of the ship's messroom- the inedible food (we learned to play poker for Maltesers- to survive!) several 'sinking' drills- us having machine guns pointed at us at the Wailing Wall, a mate of mine meeting Motorhead's Lemmy in Limassol and us discovering they had a Woolworths there. All memories come flooding back, I recall the 'rumour' that John Lennon had been shot when we were there and when getting back to Ilkeston, this was the first question we asked. Not all bad memories of course, far from it, Israel was beautiful despite the rain, Malta was the first 'hot' place I ever went to and all those Museums in Athens we trudged round were great, oh and various locals demanding '50p! Eenglish Money!' wherever we went, then flying home on Freddie Laker's DC10 Skytrain in the middle of the night and of course, the cameraderie of our school mates was priceless.
I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
