I found this website by accident. Our party was Wirral Grammar Girls- I think it was 1977 or 1978 (my scrapbook & log are still in my parents' attic!).
My parents really scrimped & saved to pack me off on this cruise- nobody in our family had ever been out of the country before, and my Grandpa (a shipwright) had a big map on which he had marked out our route (Malta, Cyprus, Egypt, Yugoslavia, flew back from Venice).
I loved it all (even the food- my mum's cooking, bless her, was not much cop!), and used to pretend to the teachers I felt really sick so I could spend time out on deck, just watching the sea for hours. I remember the stormy voyage across to Cyprus, and getting to eat everyone else's breakfast scones. I remember the canteen staff were so kind and tolerant of the hordes of grumpy, puking teenagers, plying us with oranges and sick bags.
I hated the alarm that woke us in the mornings!
Seeing Athens totally inspired me; I went on to read Classics at uni. It was sad to find out how Uganda ended up, but I'll always be really grateful for having been started off with such an amazing experience. And I still have my little metal badge! :)
