So I'm not the only one with such fond memories of the SS Uganda school cruises!
I was very lucky to experience two marvellous cruises on the Uganda. The first was in 1980 to the Baltic, visiting Travemunde, Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm, Visby and Wonderful Copenhagen. I was from Beauchamps School in Wickford. The first three days were spent leaning over the rails whist sailing a rough North Sea! I remember queueing at matrons room for a travel sickness pill and being made to swallow two water biscuits first.
I remember Action Man, of course....surely the most famous crew member of all times?
I remeber the talk of 'Carpet Land' where the proper passengers resided.
Also the games of Deck Quoits and the delight as we watched yet another dissappear overboard. The lights and sounds of the Tivoli Gardens and the thrill of being 'independent' at the tender age of 14!
But most memorable was the Christmas Cruise to the Holy Land in 1982. We had been terribly disappointed earlier to have our cruise cancelled due to the Falklands War. but then we heard that we were rescheduled onto this trip of lifetime. Starting in Naples and visiting Pompei, then Malta and it's beautiful harbour. A great storm followed but we survived and went on to Antalya in Turkey, Cyprus and Israel. I will always remember looking at the sun rising over the Holy Land on Christmas morning. The trip through the hills to Bethlehem as our teacher, Miss Humphrys, read from the Bible of the Holy Birth. The Church of the Nativity and the soldiers outside with guns. The little Olive wood crib I bought, which still comes out each Christmas time. Then on to Jerusalem and the Via de la Rosa, the Wailing Wall and the Garden Tomb. Wow....still sends shivers down my spine.
I am so grateful that I had the chance to experience these moments. Happy, happy days.
Thank you to all on board who made it so special.
