I think I was on this trip too!.

I was from Portchester Boys, Bournemouth. We flew into Split, we were told not to take any photos and there was a line of Russian Migs lined up which made it all the more exciting. I remember walking round the market in Spit and thinking what a beautiful place it was.

Im not sure where we went next but Greece, Turkey and Egypt all featured and we flew home from Venice.

In greece I remember seeing a live Octopus being dropped into a boiling pan hot hot water..and sitting in a cafe drinking Coffee that was like tar, with oozo and a glass of water!

Egypt -we had the requisite 3 hour coach trip, told not to get on camels and had the guide turn the oil lamp out and ask for change...all of which we were warned about in the lecture hall. Also remember one of my school mates - can't remember who, telling one of the market traders by the docks that Monopoly money was Scottish money. He managed to barter something but as he was walking away the trader asked another trader and found out it was fake..he chased after them but they made it to the gangplank which had a guard and got away with it! Also I remember us getting tokens for a gift shop or hotel next to the Sphinx for a bottle of coke. There was no air conditioning on the coach and it was so hot.

We also hit the storms around Biscay...everyone throwing up. I ended up in hospital but I remember the pool, which had been emptied filling up with water as the waves pounded..we had to run for the coast and I remember we were warned of force 11-12 on a sign on a wall.

The food was terrible, I think I lived on cornflakes. Remember seeing eggs floating around in greece in 3 inch pans and it stank in the canteen. Whilst I was in hospital the rest of my school got invited up to the paying section and feasted on the much improved food up there!

I also remember someone running a ring of aftershave around the dorm floor and setting light to it..it was lino and it started to melt!! lol

Anyway, amazing so many of us had such similar experiences. Venice will always be one of my fav places. I hope someone else out there remember this trip, somewhere around 80/81/82 but it could well be this one in Nov 81!!
