Noroton Heights Ct, ws an "Armed Guard" training base for signelmen, radio operators, and other ratings who served on Merchant Marine ships to protect them from, air, surface and mostly sub attacks. This base was established in "The Fitch Home for Veterans and their Survivors of the Civil War. The sbuilding was 19th century, formedin a "Quad", and the base consisted of the main building located on the main st. of the town, and the country club which was used for officer BOQ and training facilities. I was stationed there in late August of '44, as a radio man, while there, the missionof the base was changed to combat communications, and it was closed in Nov. of llthat year and the personnell were shipped to Camp Pendleton, CA, the Marine Base for training

The old barracks were torn down and a Quonset City housing facility was erected for returning Vet's and familys. A great splace to be stationed, you could hitch hike to NYC, Hartford or lmany other close by cities, also known as one of the best food bases in the Navy. Hope this takes care of any questions you might have. Steve G.
