My father-in-law served with CBMU 517. What we know about the unit is that it was formed at Camp Peary, and transferred to Gulfport, MS. They shipped overseas on October 1st, 1943, arriving at Funafuti, December 30, 1943. On October 1st, 1944, CBMU 517 arrived at Tillotson Cove, Russell Islands. Leaving the Russells on October 21st, and arrived at Leyte, PI, December 22nd. Then they moved to Guiuan, Samar via small craft on December 24th. They sailed from Samar on April 27th, 1945 and arrived at Ulithi on May 3rd, 1945. They then returned to the States and my father-in-law was discharged in November 1945, Terminal Island, California and returned to Amarillo, Texas.
My father-in-law was a ship fitter 2nd class in charge of the water filtration units at the above locations.
