This book by Tom Crew is a carefully researched, well documented history of a Gator in the Pacific and the men who served on her. I had read an early version of the manuscript and had the honor of meeting Tom and his Father a couple of years ago when he was still researching the book.
The Author sent me a signed copy from the pre-release- it arrived yesterday (12-22-06).
This is not just the story of one Gator, it is the story of all the Gators who served in the war.
Tom interviewed over 60 men from the Tate and did unbelievable research. The book is not only full of information, it is extremely well written. I am pleased to have been a small part of this project, providing scans of Cruise Books and other material that Tom used in his research.
The narratives are priceless. Some of them had me laughing my a$$ off, other brought tears to my eyes. I also had a lot of "OH WOW" moments when it cleared up things that I had pondered, but not found the answer to before. What separates this book from all others is the combination of documentation AND readability. These two things are not often found in the same book.
BUY THIS BOOK. It is a MUST read or anyone wanting to know what life was like on the Gators in WWII.
Available January-February 2007 but it can be pre-ordered now.
Publisher's page for more detailed information and to order the book.: <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.tamu.edu/upress/BOOKS/2007/crew.htm">http://www.tamu.edu/upress/BOOKS/2007/crew.htm</a>

BTW-I told Tom that I would be shamelessly pushing this book because I thought it was an important book for those interested in the Gators and live aboard ship during WWII...I have been waiting for it to be published for over 2 years...some of you have been waiting over 60 years for this story to be told.
BUY THIS BOOK. Yes, I AM biased, I've spent thousands of hours putting together the website and related activities and consider this book to be a window into the lives of the men who served on these ships.
Tom's research and efforts to get this book published dwarf my work on the website. Tom has waived royalties on this book - like my website it was done with NO profit motive-only to preserve the history of these men and to honor those who served.
