Subject: Naval Rating classification question

I am trying to find out what "V-2" means. It appears at the end of all the rate classes my father attained while in the Navy. He entered as AS (Apprentice Seaman), V-2 and was discharged as EMc1, V-2. I know EM is Electrician's Mate First Class, but what does V-2 mean?
I found a site that lists Naval abbreviations and it says V-1, V-2 and V-3 are divisions aboard aircraft carriers. However, Dad didn't serve on an aircraft carrier. He was in Ship Repair Units and rode transport ships to his various over-seas stations. Can anyone help? Many thanks!! Cynthia
