The Passage to Freedom was not kept secret at all. It was widely publicized in the press and was featured in National Geographic in a 19 page spread in June of 1955. Except for the Geographics which are still around, the rest of the articles are gone or in archives on microfilm.

Our prior involvement in Vietnam was overshadowed a decade later and all but forgotten.

The disabling of the men has been a common tactic for generations in war - practiced both as policy and independently by "loose cannons."

The French and Japanese commonly used this technique in Indochina. It is a very effective technique. A living, but diabled victim sends a strong message.
