Some novice ... you could ride circles around me!

But the point is an iteresting one. For the most part, I think the majority of VRRA members are novices, or at least as slow as novices. We're a threat to no one but out own pride! That's what attracts me to vintage racing. We make up in enthusiasm what we lack in talent and dollars.

Being last as usual, encourages me to try harder not quit trying. But I do prefer to be a close last rather than a distant last. What we need to have fun is larger grids, not separate classes. I know the combined P1-Open P1-500 races are getting a little thin and those remaining are committed and have the speed to show for it. We should encourage more of the P1 big bikes to come out. I love seeing them, hearing them, getting a close up look a them (while their owners kick them and curse at them - sorry!) Unfortunately, all we can do to encourage you is say "look, this is fun, try it." I don't think we can try to make it possible for every person to win. We just have to make it more fun for everyone, including me in last place!

That said, I thin the P1-pen class is a gret opportunity for anyone thinking of running the classic bikes. We always run the Open bikes with the 500's and so you get to be on the track and learning with some great machinery. It's one of our key classes for spectator interest. And by being on an Open bike, you at least have some more grunt to run with the 500's (no one knows your on an Open bike once the flag drops.) There is also a lot of aftermarket stuff available to build these bikes compared to the 500's.

Ray's last point is the most important one and the one we can work on this year. We need to do a better job running our weekends to ensure that rides get the most track time possible. Simply saying that people can bump up a period to get more track time is not enough. I personally would prefer to have more practice and longer races than run a short practice and short sprints. For most, I suspect, this is a better formula than having to take your bike into the next period race or bringing more than 1 bike to race more classes. This way I'm only last once!!!
