In reply to: Neil2468 's message, "Today's game" on "Sat, Oct 31 2009, 17:25:26 GMT"

The team has been improving with every game so let's hope this was just a blip. I don't think we were right mentally for the game and we were certainly not ruthless enough in dealing with their spoiling tactics.

Passing was really poor today (even in the warm up). Recycling from rucks was painfully slow to watch. Can someone tell James Rodwell that he can go left off the base of the scrum - I've never seen him go left and he is becoming too predictable. If I can see it I'm sure the opposition can too.

We are becoming far too reliant on Muldowny and Mason notwithstanding Neil's great try following a storming run by Ally. Our backs don't look threatening at all. Can anyone remember many good threequarter moves so far this season?

Who am I to comment? I'm only a humble supporter who has played amateur rugby for Kings Norton many years ago but can someone tell me how our coaches can see the whole picture of how the team is playing by standing behind the dead ball area in the first haf of every game?

And I was just complimenting the coach and Andy Hall after last weeks close loss to London Welsh! How fickle I am!

I look forward to repeating the compliment after next weeks game.

By the way great travelling support.

It intrigues me that after virtually every game this season a glut of people have seen it necessary to post on this board that "moseley are improving every week". Is it that people think that if enough people say the same thing, then it becomes true? Its like reading the Emperor's New Clothes.
The fact is, Moseley are not improving every week and havent been for some time. What we have witnessed this season, if anything, is progression. Progression is where a group of players who play together often enough learn the others' games and things happen a bit quicker and slicker. Its the sort of thing you will even see at Manchester this season, providing they have a regular team.
It has little to do with the coaches other than they pick the team.
Yesterday's game was the prime example of why Mssrs Smith and Caskie have taken Moseley as far as they can. We were stale and one-dimensional. No-one would argue that these are bad coaches and no-one would say that we are not in considerably better shape now that we were when they took over. But the fact remains that Moseley are now in need of fresh impetus and new ideas, and this is best achieved by a new coach.

Here here ! completely agree with the comments made by Rick the coaches have taken us as far as they can. Its time for new coaches ! it wasnt the coaches that won us the cup at twickers it was the guts and dermination of our boys on the pitch !!

Nope - don't agree with the coach knocking.
There were unusual (well, hopefully unusual!) circumstances this weekend. Match on, not on, off, on etc.

The tactics were in my opinion correct - just weren't executed. The coaches can only do so much - if the players don't perform, then that's a different question.

And - in case anyone didn't notice, we won!

Observer - I think the tactics were executed yesterday but Bees found a way to counter them. Whether that 'way' was entirely legal is another argument but when it became apparent that the referee wasnt going to penalise them, then we should have been able to come up with something else. That Something Else just didnt materialise yesterday. In fairness, part of the responsibility for that is the team's.
My point, which isnt just based on yesterday's performance, is that we arent going forward anymore. There comes a stage where almost all coaches, at any team, in any sport, reach a point where they cant go beyond and i think Smith and Caskie have reached that with Mose.

It is not specifically the coaches fault but Moseley suffer from the age-old team problem of the difference between knowledge and understanding.Knowledge is a tomato is a fruit and not putting it in a fruit bowl is understanding.Players at this level should know what to do but can lack the understanding of when to do it.When understanding is lacking in key areas but a side wins then you end up ' winning ugly' just as we did yesterday. Players must learn to play what is in front of them and attack the spaces. You cannot coach every situation and the players must take responsibility.
IMO our forwards are competitive if a little 'nice' but we must clear out better and quicker and some coaching on that would not be wasted. The coaches have done well on sorting out the defence which at start of season leaked too many tries. We now defend well apart frpm one non-tackling back who for reasons beyond me keeps starting!!
What we now need is to work on our attacking play to open up the tight defences in this League. Yesterday we played good rugby for 10 mins, scored 2 tries and won the game. What would we have done if players performed for ,say, 50 mins?
All back divisions need a cutting edge but we lack this in centre of field as without either May or Trinder where is the vital ingredient of pace in the centre? Borgen showed yesterday that he is worth a run at no 10 and as goal kicker and he may well have a better understanding of what to do and when. We possess 2 good wingers in Bress and M-C and so finishing is not a problem. Spee looks ok at full-back.The bar is always going up in this League and our challenge is to move up with it. That is the test for the coaches and the players. Let us see how our attacking develops over the next few games.COME ON MOSE!!

If memory serves, last season, Mose took 39 points of their 73 from the bottom 5 and 34 from 22 games against other members of the top 11. A return of 20 from 9 games is an improvement in my book.

Whilst we all want to see Mose up as high as they can, there will be periods of consolidation. Let's look at recent history.

In May 2000, the last game was played at The Reddings followed by the move to Bournbrook. At the end of the 2002/3 season, Mose were relegated following Kassam's failed attempt to destroy the club and its heritage. Consolidation was called for but a second relegation almost followed. A near promotion the following season was a consolidation (and IMHO would have been disastrous) followed by a League winning side in the first season at Billesley.

After promotion, it was a case of survival/consolidation which was achieved on the memorable final day at Waterloo. The next season saw consolidation and last season an excellent 8th place and a cup final win.

This season, all games are tough - no Manchester, Sedgley Park etc. (no disrespect intended) where 5 points are expected. So we need another season of consolidation and a Top 8 finish to confirm progress in recent years. It would be wonderful if all paths were smooth, but they rarely are.

The current path is heading upwards but there will be small downwards movements in order to reach the next milestone. I am more than happy with the guides we have on our journey!

Better to win ugly than lose beautiful in this league.

Come on Mose!

The facts, i.e. our progress over the last few seasons (and move up the table this year) do not support those who keep sniping at the coaches. If the 'knockers' can't see the improvement year on year perhaps they are missing too many matches or just looking at some of the results from afar. Yes, there have been some poor performances but overall these have been few and far between. Saturday was never going to be pretty or easy and we achieved the necessary 4 points. Ask Bristol how easy they found playing Bees? It was only a couple of seasons ago that we lost at Sharmans CRoss Road.

What better coaches are available/would be interested in coming to Billeasley? Names please, so we can compare their successes, skills and wage demands. As for the jibes about where they should sit or stand to watch a match, messrs Stirling and Biljon stood close to me at Camborne and behind the posts. It didn't seem to dilute from their coaching skills or the performance of their team!

It's easy to criticise (although for whatever reason it would appear that the snipers chose to stay away at the recent 'open session') and in this case it's simply unjustified. Waterloo came up with us and look at where they are now. It's slow and steady progress in the modern era of professional rugby and that's fine by me.

I acknowledge that this is a tough league and there are no easy games. Some of our selections seem rather strange, Nathan B on current form is a far superior player to Rob T and should be our first choice No. 14! Why can't the coaches see this?

There are occasions where the weather dictates how you can play, however playing too much ugly rugby will result in a drop in attendances. Remember, Mose you are supposed to entertain your supporters - you are fast becoming a one dimensional side like Worcs...!

The progress is, if anything, better than expected still. I wonder at selections sometimes too, but as overall progress continues I'm happy to accept that it is all part of the bigger picture.

I chose to stand behind the posts, some aspects of play (like gaps for ***** sake) are far clearer from there.

But mostly I just want to say, this was a local derby game, in which, in any sport, anything can happen! Suggesting that we dispose of a great coaching team on the back of such a game is immensely foolhardy!

Gnasher, I can assure you've ive missed very few matches this season.
I dont agree with your assessment that, certainly for the last couple of years, there has been improvement. I dont know on what basis you are making this assertion? In my view, last year we were very inconsistent and this season, with a couple of exceptions, we have been below par.
I would hope that the comments you made in respect of losing at SXR a couple of years ago and in respect of Waterloo were aberations on your part - im certainly not going to dignify them with an answer.
The point I was trying to make above, which I was hoping wouldnt be taken as a 'snipe' was merely that, in my view, the team require something fresh. I readily acknowledge that Smith and Caskie have done an excellent job in their years at the club but the time has come where need something new.

"Rick" - drop it will you. There's no need for all this. If you can't see the steady year on year progress and improvment in our league position then there is no hope for you. This is the highest league position we have been in years and quite frankly you are beginning to make a bit of a prat of your self by this unnecessary sniping. The coahes have had a limited budget each year but have done wonders with it. Or do you have some ulterior motive?

I'm in the happy position to say that I've seen all of our matches this year (inc the friendlies) and I am very happy with how things are looking. Our year on year progress has led to unreasonable expectations in some quarters from individuals who cannot see the bigger picture. Would anyone seriously not have taken the current position at the start of the campaign? There are no easy matches this year and the victories at Cov and Bees would probably have been losses in any other year.

Just out of interest is there anyone who was at Bristol calling for the coaches heads?

Seeing as though there are a few supporters calling for the coaches heads at both our clubs how about swapping both sets of coaches?!

You take ours and we'll take yours. Sound fair?!

It's a gracious thought, but if you don't mind, we'll politely decline.

Seriously, Maynard is a good coach at this level and he tends to bring his teams on through a season. Stick with him and Cov will be fine.

Looking forward to the boxing on Rugby Day (oops! rugby on Boxing Day)

Come on Mose!

I thought that'd be the reply! :)

I'm not for Maynard to go, as we've only been considerably outplayed by Bedford and Bristol - other games we've been there or therabouts.

Will make sure i pack the thermals for Boxing Day on the common.
