It was thought that the closest Plant Family to cacti on the evolutionary 'tree'was the Aizoaceae. However modern thinking is that the Cactaceae's nearest related plant family is the Portulacaceae. Australia has many species in both Families. Incidentally Africa,Madagascar and a few Indian Ocean islands have a number of recorded Rhipsalis cacti species. These however are probably just different geographic forms of only one species. Rhipsalis are epiphytes (live upon trees) and are probably similar to the ancestral cacti form. The widespread occurance of Rhipsalis in Africa etc. (and its large variety) strongly suggests that it has been there a very long time, but it may have been spread there by birds or whatever.
