To set seed on any Astrophytum you must have two or more plants with flowers open at the one time. Take a small paint brush or cotton swab and gather pollen from one flower and place it on the stigma lobe of the other. With in a week or two the base of the flower will swell up and a seedpod will form. Once the seedpod is ripe, in 3-4 weeks, it will split open of its own accord. The seeds will be shaped like little cowry shells. These will usually be dry and can be planted at your leisure. The seeds usually germinate within a few days only. If the cross-pollination fails the flower shrivels and dies without swelling up and will fall. Producing seed from Astrophytums is very easy and the relatively large seeds are amongst the easiest of all cactus seeds to germinate. Good luck. Ian
