For newcomers to the hobby it is probably best to purchase the rather simple and generalised books written for Australian conditions. They will give the basics and give you an idea of the easier plants to start with and of what should be available. If later you start to specialise then the possible field will narrow and become far more expensive. If by then you dont know what is available ask again. Rudolf Shulz and Attila Kapitany have both published books for southern Australian conditions. Any bookstore will either stock their books or get them for you.
