Hi Cactus Kid. Adansonia digitata is actually a south-eastern African species. There are a number of other species in Madagascar - their centre of diversity.
It is theorized that our lone Australian species rafted here (seed) from Madagascar. It has been here long enough to become a new species.
Boab is very likely, merely a local corruption of Baobab the African name.
