It is just as I suspected. That nursery owner is going to cop quite a few complaints from his customers, because it gets blooming cold in the Southern Highlands in winter. (Down to -10 degrees C is not that unusual).
My experience is that Echeveria imbricata is very frost tolerant. E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy', E. setosa,E. glauca pumila, E. harmsii and E. agavoides are tolerant down to around -3 degrees C (for short periods)in the open.
E. pallida burns a little around the edges when under a tree canopy, haven't tried it out in the open. So far I haven't tried any others out exposed to the full elements, but my gut feeling is that anything big, leafy and dramatic looking is probably going to be a bit sensitive to harsh conditions. If anyone else has any comments on frost hardiness in Echeverias I'd love to read them!
